Guys, there is a glimmer of hope. SMAC is a DirectX 6 game, right? In the current Starcraft Windowed thread, someone finally found a way to run Starcraft in a window with DxWnd on this page: It requires the MS Visual C++ 7.0 Runtime Library, which you can find on the same page. I haven't yet gotten this to work, but I haven't fiddled that much with the settings. Maybe someone who knows what the settings might mean, or with more free time, can figure out a way to make this work.
That would be fucking amazing. Bizarro double-post. Yes, I tested with running the expansion (terranx.exe); I'll try the other tonight. Earlier in this thread, it was pointed out that by adding the line 'DirectDraw=0' to your alphacentauri.ini file, you could get the game to run at native resolution (which is pretty sweet).
With that line left in and the default settings, no joy. I set it to 1, re-ran with default settings and it worked for me. I did have to pump the resolution to 1024x768 as auto-detect was picking it up at 640x480 or so. I've also disabled in-game movies in my config, so that's another delta (on top of the expansion pack) to consider. When I get home tonight I'll try Alpha Centauri proper and see if it doesn't work.
